Cape Fear Region

Indoor Billboard Advertising in Wilmington, NC

Forty-five venues carry Digital Wave screens across Wilmington, Leland, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Hampstead. This is the network’s home market and its deepest one.

Reading The Market

Why The Cape Fear Region Is Really Three Markets

Wilmington is where Digital Wave started, and the venues carrying screens here are not stacked into one downtown. Thirty-two of the forty-seven sit in Wilmington proper, from the blocks near the Riverwalk out through the city’s commercial corridors. Seven are on Pleasure Island, split between Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. Three are across the Cape Fear River in Leland, which is now the largest municipality in Brunswick County and which the town projects will more than double in population again by 2045. Four fall in the southern stretch of New Hanover County between the city and the island. The forty-seventh sits north of the county line in Hampstead, an unincorporated Pender County community strung along US 17 between Wilmington and Topsail Island; Hampstead has no downtown of its own and its residents shop and commute toward Wilmington, so that placement is bought with the city rather than as a market of its own.

Those pieces keep different calendars, and that matters more here than it does inland. Wilmington itself has an unusually solid year-round floor. Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center is the region’s largest employer. UNCW enrolled a record student body of roughly 19,900 in the autumn of 2025, including its largest first-year class ever. The state port keeps freight and distribution work moving regardless of the weather. And the city has been a working film and television location for four decades — well over a hundred features plus a long run of series production — which puts crews, vendors and per-diem spending on the ground in months when the beach is empty.

Pleasure Island does not behave that way. The Carolina Beach Boardwalk is open all year, but the amusement rides, the free concerts and the Thursday-night fireworks are a summer programme, and the venues down there fill on that schedule. The practical read is to run the Wilmington and Leland placements for continuity and layer the beach rooms on top from late spring through Labor Day.

It is also worth saying what this venue list is not. Only seven of the forty-seven are bars, pubs, breweries or entertainment rooms. The rest are places people sit in for a reason and cannot easily leave — a haircut, an oil change, a chiropractic appointment, a youth volleyball tournament, a gym session, a hotel check-in. That is captive dwell time, and it is the thing a roadside board on a four-lane cannot sell you.

Venue Type Breakdown

What The Mix Tells You About The Audience

Twenty separate venue types across forty-seven locations. Restaurants are the largest single bucket at thirteen, level with thirteen general-listed venues, then three Mexican restaurants, two entertainment venues and one brewery. The remaining fifteen are one-offs, and they are the interesting part: a bottle shop, an auto service shop, a barbershop, a nail salon, a tattoo studio, a chiropractic office, a gym, a hotel, a volleyball academy, a kava lounge, an Irish pub, a bar and lounge, a bar and grill, an Italian restaurant and a cafe.

Counted by what people are actually doing in the room, eighteen of the forty-seven are restaurants or cafes, five are bar, pub or brewery environments, and two are entertainment venues. That leaves twenty-two, of which nine are plainly appointment-driven or errand-driven — the auto shop, the barbershop, the salon, the tattoo studio, the gym, the volleyball academy, the chiropractic office, the hotel and the bottle shop. If your product sells to households rather than to a night out, that is the half of the list your budget should favour.

Around The Region

Coverage North And South Of The Cape Fear

Wilmington is the anchor, but the coastal network runs in both directions from here. Advertisers buying the region usually add at least one of these.

Own a Wilmington-area room and want a screen in it? The venue partner programme covers the hardware and the install. Advertisers should start on the billboards page, which covers formats, loop structure and current rates.
