Crystal Coast Coverage

Indoor Billboard Advertising in Emerald Isle, NC

Three indoor billboard venues on Bogue Banks, in the rooms visitors walk into during the first hours of a rental week.

The Arithmetic

Under 4,000 Residents. Peak Weeks Reported Near 50,000.

Emerald Isle sits on the western end of Bogue Banks, the barrier island that forms the spine of North Carolina’s Crystal Coast in Carteret County. The 2020 census counted a permanent population of roughly 3,800 people. Peak-season crowd figures for the town are commonly reported at around fifty thousand. No other market in our network swings by anything close to that factor, and it is the single most important thing an advertiser needs to understand before buying here: reach in Emerald Isle is not a constant, it is a curve.

The geography compounds it. The town is reached from the mainland over the Cameron Langston Bridge, which carries NC 58 across Bogue Sound from Cape Carteret and has been in service since 1971. Once you are on the island, NC 58 becomes Emerald Drive and runs its full length — local businesses are so consistently strung along it that they are routinely located by mile marker rather than by neighborhood. There is no grid to get lost in and no second commercial district. A visitor’s entire discovery set for the week is what they pass on that one road and what they walk into.

That is what makes indoor placement work here in a way it would not in a city. Visitors arrive on a weekly rental cycle knowing nothing about local businesses, and they make their whole week’s worth of decisions — where to eat, who to book a charter with, where to rent boards and chairs, which realty office to talk to — in the first day or two, standing inside a retail counter line. It is also why our Emerald Isle mix is retail-weighted rather than bar-and-gym led, which is the opposite of how most of the network is built. Off-season, the same screens talk to a small, stable, year-round island community and to anglers working the Bogue Inlet Pier end of town.

Timing

Buying A Market That Changes Shape In June

01

Book summer weeks early. Three venues is a hard ceiling, and it is the same three venues whether the island holds 4,000 people or 50,000.

02

Write for a stranger. In season your viewer arrived yesterday, has no habits here yet, and is deciding everything at once.

03

Do not abandon the shoulder months. Off-season the audience is small but it is resident, repeat, and cheap to stay in front of.

04

Think island-plus-mainland. Swansboro and Cape Carteret sit at the far end of the same bridge, and plenty of visitors cross it during the week.
